Malaria in Tsavo National Park

Malaria in Tsavo National Park: Tsavo national park is a combination of Tsavo East national park and Tsavo West National park. It’s Kenya’s largest national park that is covering over 22,000 square kilometres. The park is divided by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway that cuts the park in two creating Tsavo East and Tsavo West national park. Its one of the oldest national parks in Kenya which was established in April 1948. Both two parks were established in the same date and year. Its popularity lies on the unique red dusted African Elephants that are easily found roaming freely at the park. Tsavo West national park is also known as the Man eater park is famous of the predator world especially the lions who killed many railway contractors during the construction of the East African Railway line.

The location of the park in the remote desert area of Taru may make many think that there is little impact of Malaria in the park. But this is not true, the park lies in busy area near the coast bordered by hills and forests. These are all fertile grounds for the reproduction of mosquitoes at the park. However little people know much about Tsavo national park malaria. We also advise them to come with insect repellents which they use to prevent them from bits of mosquitoes. When buying the insect repellents please make sure you buy the one which has strong or high DEET percentage. This is the one recommended to be effective and can provided you guarantee of defence against these insects. Apply it before going to bed, before going for the game drives and other activities in the park.

Malaria in Africa is undoubtable and it’s the main health concern to all travellers.  Tsavo national park malaria is much at the peak of the rainy seasons that is from April to May and from October to November when the park receives its second rains. This is when much stagnant waters are found across the park hence creating fertile grounds for the reproduction of mosquitoes. The weather and the vegetation of Tsavo National park which is dominated by long dry seasons alongside short savannah grass has made the park Malaria less risk destination. The park is found in semi-desert area with few water catmint areas hence contributing to less mosquitoes at the park.

However, some parts of Kenya which are located in highland areas are less risk areas for Malaria.

The other great news is that all camps and lodges in Tsavo national park have good treated mosquito sleeping nets. This reduces on the chances of the guests getting Malaria from the park.
