Transportation: Getting There Quickly

Road (Safari Vehicle): This is the most common and often cheapest way to travel. Travel time from Nairobi to the closest Tsavo gates (like Mtito Andei for Tsavo West or Voi Gate for Tsavo East) may take between 4-6 hours of driving in a safari van or Land Cruiser. You’ll get picked up very early on Day One to arrive in time for an afternoon game drive.
Madaraka Express Train (SGR): A comfortable and scenic option. You take the train from Nairobi Terminus to Voi Station, which is quite near the entrance to the park. The train ride is much shorter, around 3.5 hours to 4 hours. You’ll need to plan to have a safari vehicle meeting you at Voi Station for the transfer and game.
Flying: The fastest but most costly option. Flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL), scheduled or chartered, operate to different airstrips inside Tsavo (e.g., Voi or Kilaguni). The flight is approximately 1 hour, maximizing your time for game drives. This option is for those who look for speed over cost.
Where to Stay: Lodges and Camps
Your choice of lodging affects your budget and experience. Tsavo features numerous great options, ranging from budget camps to luxury lodges. If you want to make the most of your short weekend, book into lodging inside or very close to the park border.
Lodges: Traditional hotels in the bush that offer all creature comforts, swimming pools, and often nice views of a waterhole. Examples are Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Tsavo West) and Ashnil Aruba Lodge (Tsavo East).
Tented Camps: Give the feel of being “close to nature” while enjoying the comforts of a proper bed and bathroom. They are a combination of adventure and comfort. Examples include Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp (Tsavo West) and Manyatta Camp (Tsavo East).

Sample Weekend Itinerary (3 Days/2 Nights).
This is an example assuming you are travelling by car or train, focusing on the key highlights of Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
Day 1: Nairobi to Tsavo and your first Game Drive.
Morning (6:00 AM): Depart from Nairobi (by road, car or SGR train to Voi).
Late Morning (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM): Arrive at your lodge/camp. Check-in and lunch.
Afternoon (3:00 PM): Your first game drive. This is when animals absolutely start to move because the day is cooling down, so you could possibly see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo). The savanna colors of the sunset are now breathtaking.
Evening: Dinner and overnight at your camp/lodge.
Day 2: Full day of exploring.
Early Morning (6:30 AM) – You can head out on a Morning Game Drive. This is the time to find and see predators like lions and cheetah before it gets hot.
Mid-Day – Return to your lodge for breakfast and rest, often you can choose a special site, (i.e., site visit, Mzima Springs- Tsavo West or Mudanda Rock- Tsavo East) you can often add in some short day visits tours to these attractions too, during your rest time.
Afternoon: Another extended game drive, traversing different sections of the park.

Day 3: Morning Drive and Return Journey to Nairobi

Late Morning (10:00): Check-out and commence the return travel to Nairobi (by road or from Voi SGR Station)
Afternoon (3:00 – 5:00): Arrive back in Nairobi feeling refreshed for a perfect weekend safari!
