What to expect in Game drive at Tsavo National park

In 1949, the Kenyan colonial administration gazetted the limits of Tsavo as a kenya wildlife sanctuary. The lengthy process of park was gazetted as a  result from the need for the authorities to consider the claims made by each and every tribe. The Maasai, Orma, Wakamba, Taita, Duruma, and Giriama were among them. In the end, the only sizable area of land set aside for wildlife was sufficient to support Kenya’s native and endangered species as well as the population of elephants and rhinos. It gave rise to the well-known Tsavo National Park, Kenya’s largest and oldest protected area. Although it wasn’t the greatest kenya wildlife location, it was the only sizable portion of the nation free of human habitation and home to a sizable population of elephants and rhinoceros.

The area was infected by flies that carried trypanosomiasis, making agriculture and livestock practices impossible. Tsavo was formerly referred to as the Taru desert. It was scorching hot and both an unpleasant and dry scrubland. Water from the Galena, Tsavo, and Tiva rivers enters Tsavo National Park. It consists of barren plains blanketed in dormant flora, baobab trees, and acacia trees. Tsavo is situated between Nairobi City and Mombasa in the Coast Province of Kenya, in the Taita-Taveta District, close to the Town of Voi. Tsavo West National Park and Tsavo East National Park are its two distinct parks. The railway that runs from Mombasa to Nairobi caused them to divide it in half. Tsavo West and Tsavo East are now divided not only by the rail line but also by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Elephant in Tsavo

The original Tsavo West National Park Headquarters provided easy access to the Mtito Andei railhead. Situated atop Kamboyo’s slopes, it provided stunning views of the amazing environment. To the north, in the recently established forest of Tsavo West National Park, which spans 3,000 square miles, is the Chyulu range of hills. Because of the amazing scenery, it was already a National Park. Tsavo West is a mountainous region with an abundance of water holes and beautiful scenery. It provides a glimpse of the pure waters of Mzima Springs, which erupt from the dry land, as well as the volcanic cones and lava flows. It is home to a variety of hitherto unknown elephants, most of them bulls. Tsavo West National Park is more wet and marshy than its eastern counterpart.

Conservation

The greatest threats to the West and East Tsavo National Parks continue to be bushfires and poaching, especially of elephants and rhinos. Elephants were severely harmed by illegal ivory poaching. There were once 45,000 of them in Tsavo, but just about 11,000 of them are left now. Nowadays, rhinos are limited to fenced-in safe havens. Although their horns are made of the same substance as fingernails, they are said to have medicinal qualities in the Far East. Therefore, rhinos and elephants will continue to be wiped out as long as the Far East has a market for ivory and horn.

Tsavo weather

Kenya experiences rather consistent weather all year round. Rainfall is not constant. Daytime highs of 28–30°C and night-time lows of 22–25°C are typical. March through May is when it rains a lot, therefore this is not the best time to go on safari. In Kenya, the brief rainy season runs from October through December. Safaris are still a wonderful idea during this time, though. The months of January through April have heavy humidity. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon is the ideal time of day to go on a game drive to see wildlife. During the sweltering midday sun, animals usually nap. However, the guides are alert at all times. In between the days, they radio one another if they see or discover anything uncommon, like a herd of lions, so that the others can take the tourists to that specific location.

Popular kenya safari tour destination

When the colonial authorities divided and developed Tsavo National Park, they had no idea that it would become one of the most popular wildlife destinations in the world. Every park, East and West, has its own special beauty. The natural splendour of Tsavo West National Park is breathtaking. Additionally, Tsavo East National Park is closer and marginally bigger for day trips. Hopefully, the population numbers of elephants and rhinos will return to what they were before the wildlife authorities implemented conservation measures and other concerned parties and well-wishers made their efforts known.
