Detailed itinerary of 7 Days Highlights of Rwanda Holiday

Day 1 – Arrive in Kigali

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your representative and be transferred to your hotel in Kigali. Then you have the option to go for a Kigali City Tour visiting the local markets and Kigali Genocide Memorial Center for an insight into the horrific Rwanda Genocide.

Day 2 – Kigali to Nyungwe Forest

After breakfast at the hotel, you will check out and embark on a journey of 5 hours towards the beautiful Nyungwe Forest National Park in the Southwest of the country.

Nyungwe Forest is home to over 300 species of birds and a quarter of Africa’s primate species with 13 primate species including chimpanzees, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys among others.

When you arrive in the park, check-in at your lodge for lunch and spend the rest of the day at relaxation or take a walk around the lodge.

Day 3 – Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest is one the highlights of Rwanda Holiday, this experience is like no other offering you a chance to observe the fascinating chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

After early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for briefing about chimpanzees trekking and be assigned chimpanzee family to trek. Then head into the forest of Nyungwe looking for the chimpanzees, the trek takes approximately 30 minutes to 6 hours or more depending on the movement of the chimpanzees and where they spent their previous night. You are allowed to spend one hour with the chimpanzees observing them go on with their life in the forest, it is fascinating to observe our closest relatives. Seeing them up close and personal is a touching experience.

Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will go for a Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk, this high suspended bridge through the canopies will allow you to see the forest through a new perspective and several primates can be seen, such as blue monkeys and the rare grey-chested Kakamega.

Day 4 – Nyungwe Forest to Lake Kivu

This morning you will depart Nyungwe Forest and be driven to the eastern shores of Lake Kivu, about 3 hours away. The beautiful Lake Kivu lies on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, home to local fishing communities, the stunning Ndaba Falls and with the option to rent a boat for island visits there is plenty of activities on offer.

Day 5 – Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge and drive to Volcanoes National Park, home to the mountain gorillas. The drive will take about four hours through stunning scenery and on arrival you will check in at your lodge and briefed on the next day’s gorilla trek.

Day 6 – Gorilla Trekking

Today is another highlight activity of this safari, gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park.

You have an early start as you make your way to the park headquarters in Kinigi for briefing about gorilla trekking experience, dos and don’ts, be assigned a gorilla family to trek and head into the misty forests looking for mountain gorillas. The trek takes approximately 30 minutes to 6 hours or more depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night.

Once the gorillas are located you will have one hour with them, observing them groom each other, pick fruits and leaves which they eat and take amazing pictures for memorable purposes. Remember to switch off your flashlight as it irritates the gorillas.

Trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and return to your lodge for an evening of relaxation.

Day 7 – Fly home

Following breakfast you will be transferred back to Kigali. Depending on your departure flight schedule you can visit the Genocide Memorial and Education Center.

You will then be driven to the airport in time for your international flight home.
